John (Jock) Grant pictured in the early days.
In 1940 an enterprising young Jim Grant, decided he wanted to open a mens barber shop and tobacconist in Gisbornes main street. He asked his brothers Bill and Jock to come onboard and Grant Bros was born.
Housing seven barbers, and a vast range of tobacco blends it quickly became a mecca for the gents of Gisborne, even having a thriving bookies operating behind the office wall for a short time. In 1950 with the addition of Jims son Robyn working out in the shop front they had quite an operation going.

The late 60s saw the next generation come into the business, Jocks sons Peter and John. Bill had passed away and Jim was ready for retirement. Peter left Grant Bros to open another retail business in the neighbouring shop in the late 70s, and Jock retired at the age of 72. At this point John took over the family business branching out into gifts, mens grooming ranges and tobacco related products to compliment what had always been in the store.
In 2011 the third generation of the Grant family was ready to come into the business. Johns daughter Renee began working in the retail part of the store, putting her own touch on the products sourced and sold in the shop. With an eye for that little something different and special, the look and feel of Grant Bros has evolved, but retains still a little touch of the past with John still operating the barber shop in the rear of the store.
Grant Bros provides its customers with a fantastic range of homewares and gifts, there is certainly something for everybody to be found. We try to give our customers choice and quality, by sourcing items from all over the world and love to by New Zealand made products where possible.
