Our Story

John (Jock) Grant pictured in the early days.

In 1938 Gisborne, an enterprising young Jim Grant opened a brand-new Barber Shop and Tobacconist alongside his brothers, Bill and Jock.

Grant Bros was born.

Before long, this burgeoning new enterprise became the Mecca for the men of Gisborne. Housing seven barbers, a stunning array of tobacco blends, and even a bookie operating from within the establishment walls – Grant Bros was a place of leisure and brotherhood.

A staple of Gisborne life, business at Grant Bros was booming and demand for their quality product and exceptional service never faulted.

Born from family, Grant Bros was handed down through the generations, blossoming and growing with each new perspective, and thus beginning a family legacy that still perseveres today.

Under second generation John, Jock’s son, Grant Bros expanded their offering to include giftware, men’s grooming ranges and tobacco related products to complement the existing merchandise.

In 2011, John’s daughter and third generation Grant, Renee, took up the reigns and began shaping Grant Bros for changing times while still holding true to the establishment’s humble, local roots.

Now, Grant Bros supplies Kiwis with an extensive, hand-picked collection of quality local and international homewares and gifts. The store remains a pivotal east coast establishment with a unique in-store experience that still includes the original Barber shop operating at the rear of the store.

Renee, John and all the Grants who have come before, humbly thank you for your patronage.
