The Pounamu Kouma (breastplate), design carries a message of physical and symbolic protection for the wearer throughout their life.
Early examples of the breastplate in Aotearoa date back to the Māori material culture of the archaic period, evolving as a type of personal body armour, whilst also mirroring the shape of the human physique.
This beautiful piece was created in Waitarere Beach, a small town on the west coast of New Zealands North Island by talented carver Ben Callow from Nephrite gathered from the Motueka River.
