Highlights:
Every year Margo, the office manager at Wainui Beach School in Gisborne, and her family, had some special visitors at her house. Some little Blue Penguins or Korora would take up residence under her house. The penguins were special but they were also VERY NOISY.
They tried everything to encourage them to move from under the house. The students in Matua Nic’s class made penguin boxes which they placed under the deck to try and entice them away. They also put them along the dunes at Wainui Beach to try and accommodate them and others, but the penguins did not like the boxes.
This book written by students explores the life, habitat and trials of adventure of thes incredible wee birds with part of the sales being donated to protecting them.

My work taps into a desire to create a reimagined traditional landscape. I use contrast in a nontraditional way with colour, texture, and brushstroke. I eschew straight, rigid lines for pigmented, melting biotic environments. Winter becomes an endless summer, moving fluidly, trying to capture a moment in nature and making it into something else. My landscapes are heavily inspired by my travels. I use neon paint to depict a field or highlight a focal point. How else would you do justice to the saturated hues of a landscape when the sunlight hits midday? Stripes portray vegetation, while geometric shapes represent mountains and trees, creating a psychedelic and dream like world.

A Kenyan-American artist and designer, Muthiga is inspired by rich color palates, vibrant patterns found in the textile markets of her birth country, numerology, naturally occurring geometry, and modern fashion houses like Chanel and Vogue. Signe & Genna Grushovenko reside in Greenville, SC. They have been married since 1999 and collaborating on paintings for nearly as long. Genna begins their process by applying rich layers of pattern and tone to gessoed masonite or linen supports. Signe then selects an inspiration image from their extensive collection of vintage found photos, draws with oil pastel atop the abstract underlayer using the photo(s) for reference, and completes the image with blocky “panes” of oil colour. The final results of their collaboration are multi-layered paintings with deep surfaces, crisp at first glance but rewarding the careful viewer with an undercurrent of complex tonality and colorplay.

For this puzzle design I wanted to capture the Tetris-like landscape of a big urban city like New York. I’ve taken a lot of my drawings I’ve done of buildings in New York over the years and combined them to give a sense of the city. You’ll notice that the super famous buildings aren’t really that prominent. Instead, I like to bring to the forefront the buildings of the everyday, the ones people actually live in and buy groceries at. I love how New York is a fully functioning place that people from all walks of life use constantly day and night and where some of these less flashy buildings are such a big part of that life.
